Like a lot of people at this time of year, I often find myself thinking about what I want to achieve in the following 12 months. I also find myself reflecting on what I learnt in the previous 12 months.
I don’t believe that I am alone in thinking that we are becoming more and more “busy” with a perpetual list of things we should be doing. I have always been an all or nothing type of person, ie I am working out 4 times a week or not at all. In some instances this has served me well but in most instances I end up burning out or procrastinating. This year, I acknowledged this tendency and focused on what I could do this week, this day, this hour or even this minute that would help me towards my goals and sometimes the answer was “take a break”.
The second lesson I learned was the importance of these days off or recovery periods and to not feel guilty about them. Before when I would feel guilty, it would then lead to further burn out or procrastination.
Everybody is different but awareness is often the first step towards growth and has certainly worked for me. I now have a list of what I want to achieve and break each one day in to smaller steps so that when I review the goal I am only focused on the next step.
What did you learn in 2018? What will you change to help you grow in 2019?
